Kihaus Folk Music Festival in Rääkkylä,
Finland.  Karelian and Finno-Ugric music meet music from other
    parts of the
world at Kihaus Folk Festival in early July. The role of Kihaus Folk
Festival is unique among Finnish folk music festivals. It takes
    place
in Northern Karelia, very near the Russian border, so it is easy to
understand that the Karelian folk music and the folk music and folk
dance of other Finno-Ugrian people have been the dominating themes
    at
Kihaus during all these years. The home of Kihaus is
Rääkkylä, which is a small municipality with
about 2700 inhabitants in Eastern Finland, 450 km to northeast from
Helsinki. The geographical situation links together the Karelia from
the both sides of the border, i.e., Finnish Karelia and Russian
    Karelia. Address:

'From 1854 on there shall be held in Røros a market, which shall

from Mary Barthelemy (about Rørosmartnan 2010)
The annual winter fair in Røros - Rørosmartnan - takes
off at 12:00 noon Tuesday Feb. 16 in 2010. And gains height and
    speed
during 5 days of dance, music and spontaneity among culture
    enthusiasts
as well as normal people. Dance day and night. And if you are
    insecure
about your gammeldans-technique or one of the turns in Røros
pols, come and learnby doing to music played by good Røros
musicians and their eminent friends. Final dance is Saturday nite
    ...
into the wee hours ... and if you plan right, you can make it (I
think!) to Blefjell by evening with stories to tell... and a
    Røros-experience you'll never forget :-)
This is not a camp, but truly a traditional fair with plenty of
traditional music and dance energy. Always starts on the
      next-to-the-last
      Tuesday
      in
      February.
      Lodging
      is
      always
      a
      challenge, but normally works
out. I'm willing to help serve as a friendly local contact point

      more info... Mary Barthelemy maryb@online.no

        Nordlek
      is a Nordic folklore festival
that is arranged every third year. It is arranged in each of the
      Nordic
countries in turn. It attracts literally thousands of dancers and
musicians. For one summer week there are people in colorful
      costumes
everywhere, dancing, playing and enjoying themselves. Next Nordlek will be arranged in 2012 in
      Steinkjer, Norway. For more
      information
      see  http://www.nordlek.org.
    English
    web
    page:
    http://nordlek.no/?lang=en

Comments from Alix Cordray: Unlike in previous years, you can
register individually online. There is no longer any requirement
        to
register through a member organization. The registration
        deadline is
April 15. Paying the general registration fee is sufficient -
        you do
not need to register for any special events. Included are dance
        classes
every day and an evening dance in 4 halls. However, you might
        want to
buy additional tickets for a concert or two. Participants learn
        one one
dance from each country prior to the festival (and musicians
        learn one
tune). Media are available for download from the Nordlek site.
        Alix has
created a free iPhone/iPod app that contains all the media
        (video,
        audio, sheet music, and instructions).
